Special Session "Recent Advances in Evolving Fuzzy Systems" at EUSFLAT/IFSA

Time:
July 24, 2009 - 08:00 - 17:00
Location:
Lisbon, Portugal
Event type:
Workshop
Contact:
Edwin Lughofer
Description:

Fingerprint I (Image Enhancement)

Short-Text:

Given a database of fingerprint images, our task is to reduce the rejection rate by enhancing the images.

Fingerprints taken by line sensors are inherently of bad quality and biased with certain kind of noise. In particular partly destroyed regions of the skin and folds are reducing the detection performance considerably.
In this project we are concerned with the following tasks:

  • Improving the general image quality
  • Seperation of ridges and folds and removal of folds by imprinting
  • Improving other partly recognizable regions
  • Considering uncertainty in the fingerprint matching algorithms.

Inspections of prints

Short-Text:

Improving the quality control of a printing process.

After a - possibly long lasting - learning phase, human experts can rate the quality of a complex product quite well. These ratings, however, often are subjective to a certain degree. In order to implement a quality control software system, two goals have to be met: on the one hand, one wants to obtain an objective quality measure; one the other hand, one wants to retain a "human-like" quality rating. Due to the "soft" nature of Fuzzy Logic, both aims can be reached by modelling the expert knowledge with a fuzzy system.
